Worship With Us

We journey in faith, together.

Every Sunday, you'll hear our Pastors bring biblical stories and themes into conversation with the issues we face in our lives today.

Inspired by the radical ministry and life of Jesus, our Calvary community takes action toward a more inclusive, equitable, peaceful, and loving world. God welcomes us as we are and then challenges us to grow deeper in love, welcome, justice, and compassion.

Adult Education & Spiritual Formation: The LGBT Asylum Project
SUNDAY, 2.1.26
11:30 AM • LOUNGE
The LGBT Asylum Project is a San Francisco–based nonprofit founded in 2015 by two immigration attorneys to address a critical gap: accessible, culturally competent legal representation for LGBTQ+ immigrants fleeing persecution because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. They were the first and only immigration nonprofit located in the Castro District – a historic entry point for many LGBTQ+ people arriving in San Francisco. Join us as we learn about their work and mission as it intersects with God’s call to welcome the stranger, immigrant, and sojourner.
Our speaker Kenan Arun is a passionate LGBTQ+ activist and artist, with over 15 years of experience working on LGBTQ+ issues in both Turkey and the United States. Currently serving as the Executive Director at The LGBT Asylum Project - Center for Immigrant Protection, Kenan has been a vital force in supporting the organization’s mission. His creative contributions extend beyond advocacy work, as he is also a resident makeup designer for Golden Thread Productions and an active volunteer with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, along with serving as a board member at The Turkish American Gezi Platform. His deep connection to the community and commitment to LGBTQ+ rights make him a valuable addition to LGBTAP’s leadership team.
Author Talk - VIGIL with
GEORGE SAUNDERS
Monday, Feb. 2, 2026 • 7pm • $34 + fees, includes book
At Calvary Presbyterian Church • 2515 Fillmore Street, San Francisco

In partnership with Book Passage, we are absolutely honored to welcome the acclaimed George Saunders to Calvary Presbyterian for a special evening celebrating the release of his much-anticipated new book, Vigil: A Novel.
With the wisdom, playfulness, and explosive imagination we’ve come to expect, George Saunders takes on the gravest issues of our time—the menace of corporate greed, the toll of capitalism, the environmental perils of progress—and, in the process, spins a tale that encompasses life and death, good and evil, and the thorny question of absolution.
We look forward to seeing you for a memorable evening!

Adult Education & Spiritual Formation - How Stories can save us with Mark Yaconelli
Sunday, February 8 • 11:30am • Lounge
In an increasingly fast-paced and fractured world, sharing stories can be a radical and deeply human practice for uncovering the ties that bind us to one another. Story invites us to step into the reality of another person’s existence and instead of judgment feel kinship. Through his work with The Hearth nonprofit, Mark Yaconelli has served communities across the United States and United Kingdom to bridge divisions, heal trauma, shed light on injustice, and recover hope. In this inspiring and interactive presentation, Mark will show how stories can heal our families, our world, ourselves.

Church Night Lenten Studies - Handel’s Messiah in Lent
And we shall be changed. Starting February 26, Thursdays in Lent from 5:30-7:30pm
Additional groups will be offered on Tuesdays at 1pm and Sundays at 11:30am, only for those who cannot make it on Thursday. We encourage everyone, however, to attend Thursday nights whenever possible!
This Lenten Season, our “Church Night” Lenten Bible Study is for both the biblical seeker and the music lover. We will explore the scriptural texts of Handel's Messiah for Lent. While the first part of the Messiah is about the birth of Jesus, this musical journey is well-suited for Lent because it was originally written as an Easter offering, with its second and third parts focusing on Christ's Passion, death, resurrection, and ascension, making its themes of sacrifice, redemption, and glory ideal for the Lenten journey towards Easter.
Lenten Studies this year will be the focus of Church Nights which will be held on Thursdays of Lent from 5:30 – 7:30pm. Mark your calendars for 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2. Childcare provided for infants & toddlers, and special Lenten programming offered for youth and children.
This lenten journey will culminate with sections of Handel's Messiah presented in worship, with our Chancel Choir, soloists, and orchestra, on Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter.
Additional groups will be offered on Tuesdays at 1pm and Sundays at 11:30am, only for those who cannot make it on Thursday. We encourage everyone, however, to attend Thursday nights whenever possible!
Adult Education & Spiritual Formation — FROM PAYBACK TO LOVE BACK: Relating Without Retaliating
Sunday, April 19 • 11:30am • Lounge
The will to retaliate is in all of us. The Sermon on the Mount offers an alternative: Love your enemies. This is a challenging practice indeed. We explore the role of revenge in ourselves and in the world around us. We can look for ways to choose reconciliation over retribution, forgiveness over payback, love over division.
David Richo, Ph.D., is a formerly active Catholic priest and now a psychotherapist and self-help writer. His book is Sweeter than Revenge. (davericho.com)
Barry Brown, is a former Protestant minister and now a teacher, mentor, and workshop leader. Barry combines storytelling and spiritual formation/practices in his work.

The Women of Calvary Bible Study

3rd Thursdays of the month • zoom • 6 - 7:15pm

The Women of Calvary Bible Study meets via Zoom on the third Thursday of the month from 6 pm - 7:15 pm starting on September 18, 2025.
This year's study is Finding Resilience, Joy, and Our Identity in Jesus Christ by Rhashell D. Hunter. In this Bible study, we will explore resilience. This is modeled for us by several biblical characters, gospel and epistle writers, as well as Jesus. The Bible study is also about joy. How do we find joy in a chaotic world? Christian joy may be different from how a lot of people define joy. We will also seek to rediscover our identity.
Please join us for this study whether you're new to Bible Study or have participated in this study for years. Books are $10, scholarships available!

Selfless Love
(ah-gah-pé)

We are called to show God’s love for the world and to manifest agape love – a deep and selfless commitment to the well-being of others.

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.
John 13:34-35

Spiritual
Depth

We actively seek to understand scripture and its meaning in our lives today, working to grow in our faith and relationship with God.

Do not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2

Inclusion
& Diversity

We are all children of God. We proclaim that all are one family in Christ and seek to live like we mean it.

There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:28

Justice for the Marginalized

We challenge ourselves to see systems and structures that disadvantage and oppress others – that stand in the way of God’s kingdom coming “on earth as it is in heaven,” and are willing to take part in seeking solutions.

God has told you, O Mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8

From our Pastors

Whether online or in-person, now is a wonderful time to join the Calvary community in worship and friendship. A time to pray and learn. At Calvary we hope to be a welcoming community, living the Christian faith in word and action. Whether you are young or old, a spiritual seeker or a long-time church attender–you are welcome here. Special services are held throughout the liturgical year, with notice of the services appearing here on Calvary’s website as well as in our Sunday worship bulletin. We look forward to emerging from this time of pandemic, ready to respond to God’s dreams for our congregation and our community. Please join us. You are welcome here.

FAQs

  • What do I wear?

Come as you are. You can wear your Sunday best, casual wear, or pajamas. Generally, our congregation dresses casual (tshirt and jeans) or business casual (button down/slacks or dresses). If you come with an extravagant hat, we can assure you that you will get many compliments :)

  • Can I join the Sunday Service Chancel Choir?

Sure can! The Calvary Chancel Choir is a free, all volunteer choir. Rehearsals are every Sunday from 8:45-9:45am and you are invited to perform during the 10am service. You will be provided music, black choir booklet, and performance robe. We have added the new Fillmore Choir that is free to join on Thursday nights from 7-9pm for concerts and non-Sunday service performances. Contact our Music Director Michael Conley for more information about either choir.

  • What's the parking situation?

Not always great! (Just being honest) While there is often street parking around Calvary, we do not have a lot or parking structure.

We suggest walking, taking public transit (Muni #22 & #24), or using rideshare if possible.

Another option is to use Sutter Health’s/CPMC’s garage at Clay and Webster. Their “community parking coupon” is just $8 for up to 6 hours after 5pm and on weekends.

Ask at our front desk for one before you leave.

  • I'm not sure if Calvary is the right place for me...

That's perfectly fine! We understand. We hope you drop by for at least one service to see if who we are aligns with your path in life. In recent years, we've held events such as Drag Queen Bible Story Hour, Anti-Racism Workshops, joined the SF Night Ministry with serving folks in the Tenderloin, held a campaign to spread awareness about ending gun-violence, and have posted about the harm that the anti-LGBT 'Clobber Passages' have done to the queer community. Our head pastor, Marci, serves on the Clergy Advisory Board for Planned Parenthood, and the entire United Presbyterian Church denomination has been pro-choice for several decades and believe in women's reproductive autonomy. If these things inspire you, then you're in the right place! If they don't, that's a-okay – there are tons of different houses of faith/worship in San Francisco that align with different values and we hope you find the right place to call home :). Rest assured, though, you are always welcome to find sanctuary at our church.
