Living Sanctuary (Immigrants & Refugees)

For those seeking sanctuary in the midst of transition.

Immigrants and refugees are welcome here

In accordance with Micah 6:8, Calvary is committed to the biblical teaching to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. Welcoming and walking with immigrants and refugees in our city has been a long-time commitment for our congregation, even before we became a sanctuary church in 2018.

With your participation and support, Calvary will continue and expand this work, growing the impact we can make in San Francisco, the Bay Area, and the world.

We invite you to join us and get involved with Calvary’s Living Sanctuary Team!

Seeking Volunteers

Throughout the year, we offer one-time and ongoing serving opportunities. The Living Sanctuary team and its supporters have helped our immigrant friends by:

  • Writing letters of support to immigrants in detention.
  • Attending court hearings and appointments.
  • Assisting with written and verbal translation opportunities. We’re in urgent need of Spanish-speaking volunteers!
  • Connecting immigrants to local resources: sharing information about pop-up food pantries, pro-bono legal services, and other community partners.
  • Reaching out to our networks to help find odd jobs.

Upcoming Living Sanctuary Events

Adult Education & Spiritual Formation: The LGBT Asylum Project
SUNDAY, 2.1.26
11:30 AM • LOUNGE
The LGBT Asylum Project is a San Francisco–based nonprofit founded in 2015 by two immigration attorneys to address a critical gap: accessible, culturally competent legal representation for LGBTQ+ immigrants fleeing persecution because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. They were the first and only immigration nonprofit located in the Castro District – a historic entry point for many LGBTQ+ people arriving in San Francisco. Join us as we learn about their work and mission as it intersects with God’s call to welcome the stranger, immigrant, and sojourner.
Our speaker Kenan Arun is a passionate LGBTQ+ activist and artist, with over 15 years of experience working on LGBTQ+ issues in both Turkey and the United States. Currently serving as the Executive Director at The LGBT Asylum Project - Center for Immigrant Protection, Kenan has been a vital force in supporting the organization’s mission. His creative contributions extend beyond advocacy work, as he is also a resident makeup designer for Golden Thread Productions and an active volunteer with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, along with serving as a board member at The Turkish American Gezi Platform. His deep connection to the community and commitment to LGBTQ+ rights make him a valuable addition to LGBTAP’s leadership team.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

U.S./Mexico Border Delegation Trip Photos - May 17-20, 2024

Nine representatives from Calvary traveled down to Tijuana and the U.S./Mexico Border wall to learn more about the migrant crisis and get a first-hand look at what the process to asylum in America looks like.

Volunteers at Whiskey 8 Humanitarian Aid site giving communion to a group of migrants on the other side of the wall, awaiting to be taken into processing from border patrol. This is during a worship service.
