Living Sanctuary (Immigrants & Refugees)

For those seeking sanctuary in the midst of transition.

Immigrants and refugees are welcome here

In accordance with Micah 6:8, Calvary is committed to the biblical teaching to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. Welcoming and walking with immigrants and refugees in our city has been a long-time commitment for our congregation, even before we became a sanctuary church in 2018.

With your participation and support, Calvary will continue and expand this work, growing the impact we can make in San Francisco, the Bay Area, and the world.

We invite you to join us and get involved with Calvary’s Living Sanctuary Team!

Seeking Volunteers

Throughout the year, we offer one-time and ongoing serving opportunities. The Living Sanctuary team and its supporters have helped our immigrant friends by:

  • Writing letters of support to immigrants in detention.
  • Attending court hearings and appointments.
  • Assisting with written and verbal translation opportunities. We’re in urgent need of Spanish-speaking volunteers!
  • Connecting immigrants to local resources: sharing information about pop-up food pantries, pro-bono legal services, and other community partners.
  • Reaching out to our networks to help find odd jobs.

Upcoming Living Sanctuary Events

FAITH IN ACTION
& MISSION FAIR

Sunday, September 28 • 11am • Calvin Hall

You’re invited to engage your faith in new ways this year. During coffee hour, come connect with newly re-organized church committees and teams, and with our community partners. Our faith community grows in service and there are many ways to do that. Calvary’s new committees will be organized around the following areas:
• Mission & Care (formerly Faith in Action)
• Faith Formation
• Worship & Music
• Church Growth & Community Engagement
• Governance & Administration
There are ways for you to serve and connect on a regular basis, or on more ‘one off’ events. Whatever level of time and talent you would like to share—we have opportunities for that. We will also recognize and give thanks for members and friends – including children and youth – working for equity and justice and showing God’s loving kindness in San Francisco and around the world.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

Nine representatives from Calvary traveled down to Tijuana and the U.S./Mexico Border wall to learn more about the migrant crisis and get a first-hand look at what the process to asylum in America looks like.

Volunteers at Whiskey 8 Humanitarian Aid site giving communion to a group of migrants on the other side of the wall, awaiting to be taken into processing from border patrol. This is during a worship service.
