Adult Education & Spiritual Formation

We are life-long learners who seek to grow in faith, understanding, and depth.

Come learn and explore your faith with us!

The goal of Adult Education and Spiritual Formation at Calvary is to create educational ministries and nurture an environment that enables and excites people of all ages to grow in Christian faith and affirm their faith with the church, the city, and the world.

Bible Studies

We offer Men’s and Women’s Bible Studies on Zoom as well as in-person Bible Study at the church on Sunday mornings at 9am. During the season of Lent, we hold a church-wide Lenten Small Group Bible Study.

At Calvary, we read scripture in its historical and cultural contexts as we learn together how this sacred text continues to apply to our lives today.

Adult Education & Spiritual Formation: The LGBT Asylum Project
SUNDAY, 2.1.26
11:30 AM • LOUNGE
The LGBT Asylum Project is a San Francisco–based nonprofit founded in 2015 by two immigration attorneys to address a critical gap: accessible, culturally competent legal representation for LGBTQ+ immigrants fleeing persecution because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. They were the first and only immigration nonprofit located in the Castro District – a historic entry point for many LGBTQ+ people arriving in San Francisco. Join us as we learn about their work and mission as it intersects with God’s call to welcome the stranger, immigrant, and sojourner.
Our speaker Kenan Arun is a passionate LGBTQ+ activist and artist, with over 15 years of experience working on LGBTQ+ issues in both Turkey and the United States. Currently serving as the Executive Director at The LGBT Asylum Project - Center for Immigrant Protection, Kenan has been a vital force in supporting the organization’s mission. His creative contributions extend beyond advocacy work, as he is also a resident makeup designer for Golden Thread Productions and an active volunteer with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, along with serving as a board member at The Turkish American Gezi Platform. His deep connection to the community and commitment to LGBTQ+ rights make him a valuable addition to LGBTAP’s leadership team.
Adult Education & Spiritual Formation - How Stories can save us with Mark Yaconelli
Sunday, February 8 • 11:30am • Lounge
In an increasingly fast-paced and fractured world, sharing stories can be a radical and deeply human practice for uncovering the ties that bind us to one another. Story invites us to step into the reality of another person’s existence and instead of judgment feel kinship. Through his work with The Hearth nonprofit, Mark Yaconelli has served communities across the United States and United Kingdom to bridge divisions, heal trauma, shed light on injustice, and recover hope. In this inspiring and interactive presentation, Mark will show how stories can heal our families, our world, ourselves.
Adult Education & Spiritual Formation — FROM PAYBACK TO LOVE BACK: Relating Without Retaliating
Sunday, April 19 • 11:30am • Lounge
The will to retaliate is in all of us. The Sermon on the Mount offers an alternative: Love your enemies. This is a challenging practice indeed. We explore the role of revenge in ourselves and in the world around us. We can look for ways to choose reconciliation over retribution, forgiveness over payback, love over division.
David Richo, Ph.D., is a formerly active Catholic priest and now a psychotherapist and self-help writer. His book is Sweeter than Revenge. (davericho.com)
Barry Brown, is a former Protestant minister and now a teacher, mentor, and workshop leader. Barry combines storytelling and spiritual formation/practices in his work.

The Women of Calvary Bible Study

3rd Thursdays of the month • zoom • 6 - 7:15pm

The Women of Calvary Bible Study meets via Zoom on the third Thursday of the month from 6 pm - 7:15 pm starting on September 18, 2025.
This year's study is Finding Resilience, Joy, and Our Identity in Jesus Christ by Rhashell D. Hunter. In this Bible study, we will explore resilience. This is modeled for us by several biblical characters, gospel and epistle writers, as well as Jesus. The Bible study is also about joy. How do we find joy in a chaotic world? Christian joy may be different from how a lot of people define joy. We will also seek to rediscover our identity.
Please join us for this study whether you're new to Bible Study or have participated in this study for years. Books are $10, scholarships available!

Thank you for attending our Q&A with Paul & Tenisha on November 19!

It was an absolutely informative session with one of the couples featured in the documentary Lowballed.
If you haven't had a chance to watch the film yet,
please stream it here for free.

Paul and Tenisha had a housing appraisal in Marin City, CA where the appraiser lowballed them by an incredulous amount because they had 'black items' in their house, like food, art, books, clothes, and more. After seeing several red flags on their appraisal, they experimented later on by taking their belongings out of their house and replaced them with 'white items' and their next appraisal was $500,000 higher than the previous one. The documentary highlights a few black and brown families across America that have experienced this part of systemic racism.

We continue to march forward in unity, action, and spirit for justice of the oppressed.
