Each year Calvary takes a break from the city to gather at Mount Hermon, a retreat center nestled in the Santa Cruz mountains. The setting is beautiful. Mount Hermon has redwoods, a field for games, an outdoor pool and a dining hall. We sing, worship and study. We swim, hike, play kickball, roast s’mores over a campfire and even have our own talent show.
All are welcome. We have always had a diverse group. Some are single and some bring the whole family. Children, youth and adults each have their separate opportunities to learn and play. There’s a variety of housing, including hotel-like rooms to whole cabins
Responding to God in a New Day
Jesus brought a new way of being and seeing the world. Throughout history, the church, as followers of Christ, has tried to respond and change according to God’s call. This year’s All Church Retreat will explore the challenges the church is facing and how we are being called and enabled by the Holy Spirit to faithfully respond. How can we as individuals and as members of the Body of Christ respond to God in this new day?
Speaker: Dr. Rodger Nishioka
Dr. Nishioka is the Benton Family Associate Professor of Christian Education at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. As a professor, Rodger focuses on equipping pastors to be teachers and leaders in the church’s educational ministry and is particularly interested in building a congregation’s youth and young adult ministries. Rodger has gifts for leading churches and its members through change and challenging times and has the special ability to relate to people of all ages from children to senior adults. Born in Honolulu and raised in Seattle at the Japanese Presbyterian Church, he is evidence that you can be a preacher’s kid and still love Jesus.
