The Interfaith Food Pantry provides a neighborhood outlet close to public transportation for free groceries from the SF Food Bank. Each Saturday, one of five host churches uses the Old First Presbyterian Church’s meeting hall to distribute a week’s worth of food to 300 families. The churches use their own funds to buy protein products from the Food Bank to supplement the abundant variety of donated produce.
Calvary needs 18 volunteers each time we staff the pantry. Volunteers carry boxes of food from the sidewalk to the lower level, set up the distribution and registration areas, unpack and arrange the food, hand out the groceries, and clean up. Everyone is welcome! Families with children 5 years or older are encouraged to participate – children generally enjoy this activity. There are also tasks that do not involve physical activity.
The volunteer shift is from 7:30 – 11:00 am. Free parking validation stickers are available to volunteers who park at the Old First Garage next to the church, on Sacramento Street.
