Statement from the Session (Board) of Calvary Presbyterian Church, San Francisco
The community of Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, shaken and saddened by the hatred that led to the massacre of 49 sacred lives at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, wants to express our deep condolences to the families and friends of everyone killed, wounded or hurt.
We stand with the global LGBTQ community. We condemn this violence, and all forms of hate speech that in any way justify harming people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity in the name of any belief system.
We stand with people of all faiths who seek peace and work for justice. We embrace our Muslim brothers and sisters who work to combat the very hatred for which they are too often universally blamed.
We believe we are called to increase every effort to build understanding among all people, and to work daily for the active advancement of peace and harmony so that violence will cease.
As leaders of Calvary, we call on our local and national officials to take actions to help reduce the likelihood of future mass shootings. We encourage each member and friend associated with the Calvary community to pray, to bring kindness into the world, and to take actions to help reduce the likelihood of future mass shootings or violence of any kind.
We believe that truth and light will prevail over the darkness and will work each day to represent the selfless love modeled by Jesus.
We embrace the words of Harvey Milk, that “Hope will never be silent.”
We seek to live into the prophetic call of Martin Luther King, Jr.:
“Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
